2015-04-05

Team VICTOR’s Lee Yong Dae was just one point from reclaiming the Malaysia Open Superseries Premier title on Sunday with Yoo Yeon Seong, but finally downed by familiar rivals Ashan and Setiawan.

Having survived Taiwanese No.1 Lee Sheng Mu and Tsai Chia Hsin in the semifinals, where they saved a match point down 19-20 in the deciding game, Lee and Yoo came up in full force with their “first-shots” badminton, befuddling the Indonesian former No.1s in the first game and won it with a handy 21-14 before Ashan/Setiawan stormed back to hold four match points in the decider. Lee/Yoo saved them all again, leveled the match at 20-all, and Yoo’s quick interception earned them a match point of their own which they failed to convert as the Hawk-eye proved a defensive lob sailed long.

Lee was crowned here in 2009 with Jung Jae Sung, but this time, he fell just short. However, Lee and Yoo believe they have found back the winning formula after a slow start into the season.

Another Jung in Team VICTOR Korea, the unseeded Jung Kyung Eun, alongside 2013 World Championships runner-up Chang Ye Na, also claimed a silver in women’s doubles.
