Taiwan’s Tai to Break Into Top 5 with Singapore Plate

2015-04-12

In a few days, when the new BWF (Badminton World Federation) World Rankings release, we will have a Top 5 debutant in the Women’s Singles discipline.

Team VICTOR young star Tai Tzu Ying, with a runner-up showing in the OUE Singapore Open, is projected to surpass Korean Sung Ji Hyun and rise to a career high of No.5, breaking her own record of No.6 as the best ranked female shuttler in singles in Taiwanese history.

However, as good as Tai finally setting her foot inside the Top 5, she could have narrowed the gap of points between No.4 Wang Shixian and her had she taken one of the three championship points she had in Sunday’s final against Sun Yu, where Tai lost 21-13 19-21 22-20 in 72 minutes.

This is Tai’s second Singapore finals after 2010 when she was just 16.

Aiming for a “three-peat” at the Superseries event, Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir ended their journey in the semifinals, downed by top seeds Zhang and Zhao. Natsir was also chasing her seventh career Singapore title.
